The modest incentives you’re receiving now from 2017 MIPS can turn into significant value by 2021 if you take targeted action in 2019 to protect your scores.
There is significant financial upside in 2019 MIPS for exceptional performers who score >75 points. In fact, every point above 75 will be worth thousands of dollars, 8-10X more than a point under 75. Given the changes CMS made to the program to make it more competitive however, it will be challenging to maintain the high scores many earned in 2017 and 2018.
Promoting Interoperability (PI) has been completely altered, going from one of the easiest categories to one of the toughest. Did you know that about 80% of what you’ve been doing for the PI category in 2017 and 2018 has changed in 2019? This will greatly impact your ability to earn 100% in this category. Quality still is the highest weighted category and could end up being the most vital aspect of your 2019 MIPS score depending on the readiness of your EHR. Did you know that if your EHR is not ready to support the new PI measures for 2019 MIPS, the category will be re-weighted to Quality? This means that the Quality category weight could jump from 45% to 70%!
